Fruit and Vegetable Storage

strawberry1How Long Do Strawberries Last?

How long do strawberries last? The shelf life of strawberries depends when the strawberries were picked (since there is not usually a sell by date) and how they are stored.

Strawberries are a delicious fruit best in the spring and summer when they are fresh off the strawberry plant. Strawberries are a popular fruit because of their fresh sweet taste and ease of preparation – they can be eaten right off the stem (after rinsing of course) with little waste or used in hundreds of different ways.

So, how long do strawberries last? When properly stored, the shelf life of fresh strawberries past their picked or purchased date is approximately …

Strawberries Expiration Date

(Unopened/Opened) Counter Refrigerator Freezer
Fresh Whole Strawberries last for 1-2 Days 5-7 Days 6-8 Months
Fresh Cut Strawberries last for 1 Day 1-3 Days 3-4 Months

Of course, strawberries last for a shorter period of time if they are not stored properly. But remember, strawberries, like a lot of other fresh fruits, usually do not have a use by date or a best before date so you will have to use the date purchased. Sometimes when strawberries are purchased in a package it is labeled with the date the strawberries were packed into the container or there will be a best buy date on strawberries purchased frozen – this date can be used to calculate the eat by date.

How to tell if Strawberries are bad, rotten or spoiled?

Practicing proper hygiene and food safety techniques will help prevent foodborne illness.

Although not a perfect test, your senses are usually the most reliable instruments to tell if your strawberries have gone bad. Some common traits of bad strawberries are a mushy, soft texture and some discoloration and bruising and then mold will start to appear.

There are, of course, certain health risks associated with spoiled foods so always remember to practice food safety and enjoy your foods before their shelf life has expired!

How to store Strawberries to extend their shelf life?

Strawberries should be stored directly from the store (*do not wash) into a tightly sealed BPE free plastic air-tight container to keep out moisture and other contaminants, this will keep them fresh well beyond any other storage method. This tip is from a farmer and beats any other way to store strawberries, just be sure to *rinse your strawberries off immediately before use and leave the rest sealed for 5 days or even more depending on your container. If they begin to taste like plastic after several days, then your container may not be BPE free and some of the chemicals from the container are beginning to leak into the fruit (you should get new containers).

Some benefits of proper food storage include eating healthier, cutting food costs and helping the environment by avoiding waste.

Food Waste Facts

There are 870 million people in the world today who are undernourished, according to the World Food Programme. That means one out of every eight people is not getting enough food—more than three times as many people as live in the United States.

It’s rather uncomfortable, in light of that daunting figure, to face the facts found in a new report released by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IME): Globally, we’re wasting four billion tons of food every year. In developed countries, we throw away as much as half of the food we buy.

How long are Strawberries good for when prepared in a dish?

How long do strawberries last? That depends. How long do bakery products last? In general, strawberries last only as long as the quickest expiring ingredient in the dish, but fresh strawberries will probably be one of the first ingredients to turn bad.
